Nautilus Deputy Editor

Remote - Full Time

Nautilus is growing, and we’re looking for a deputy editor to join our team of creative editors, writers, and artists. Work remotely and be part of a small and collaborative crew who love to share inspirational ideas and bring them to life on our website, in our print magazine, and through our newsletter. Established 12 years ago in New York City, Nautilus regularly wins national awards and has stories featured in The Best American Science and Nature Writing. We explore the beauties and insights of science. We ask big questions and present authoritative answers through narratives with original voices and perspectives. We show how science informs our universe, lives, and cultures.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Edit and top edit articles to the highest standards in journalism and science
  • Oversee a fantastic stable of contract writers and editors 
  • Contribute to editorial strategy 
  • Stay abreast of latest trends and developments in science–through daily reading in science literature and news–as well as current narrative journalism and culture
  • Ensure quality and alignment with voice, mission, strategy, values, and brand 

What We’re Looking For

  • A vision for compelling storytelling and keen eye for detail 
  • A passion for science in all fields and a curious mind
  • Several years of editing experience, primarily in magazine journalism, ideally with experience top editing features
  • Big ideas about the intersections of science and culture with unique POVs
  • Great working relationships with experienced writers and editors
  • Independent thinkers who love a good laugh
